RUMPEL, Oscar Hedley, Lt, RCNVR, MPK - 18 Mar 1945, HMCS GUYSBOROUGH - Son of Oscar and Ada Rumpel, of Kitchener, Ontario.

 

Lt Rumpel died when his ship, HMCS GUYSBOROUGH, was torpedoed and sunk by U-868 in the Bay of Biscay with the loss of 53 of her crew.

 

Lieut. Oscar (Tods) Rumpel, R.C.N.V.R., son of Mrs. Ada Rumpel, 125 Queen St. N. and the late Oscar Rumpel, is reported missing at sea as a result of enemy action. The notification received by his mother contains no details. Veteran of ten trips back and forth across the English Channel during the D-day invasion of France, the 33-year-old officer was home on leave last fall. He enlisted in the navy in April, 1942, and proved the mainstay in training the boys as a lieutenant in the early days of the K-W Sea Cadets. Training at H.M.C.S. Prevost, London, he passed on his knowledge as he gained it. Graduating at H.M.C.S. King's at Halifax in November, 1942, he was based at Sydney, N.S., as adjutant for some time before serving with the Royal Navy in combined operations in October, 1943. Lieut. Rumpel is a graduate of Ridley College and the University of Toronto.
