Able Seaman John Michael McCarthy was born in St. John's, Newfoundland and educated at Holy Cross School, St. John and in Corner Brook where he resided for some time. Prior to enlisting in the Navy he worked as a Switchboard operator on the SS Monarch of Bermuda.
