TURNER, Henry Maurice (Hank / Maurie) - passed away peacefully, after battling an extended illness with Asbestosis, on May 20, 2017, whilst in care at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital's Extended Care Unit #1. Hank was a loving, caring, generous soul and will be missed by many. He had a storied career in the RCN, enlisting in 1952 as an O/S and remained 26 years, until his retirement, as a CPO1, in 1978. Hanks marine career in the RCN, encompassed serving on the majority of the RCN's vessel classes, teaching his trade (Torpedo Anti Submarine) at the on shore facilities, culminating with his becoming a submariner, serving on the HMCS GRILSE. He followed that adventure up, by joining the BC Ferries, working from the Swartz Bay Terminal, for 17 years. Upon retirement from the ferry service, Hank tooted his time away on his assortment of tubas, with four different brass bands (the Celebration Brass Band, the Sidney Concert Band, the Shriners Band & the Petty Officer's band), utilizing skills that he attained from his early years in the Edmonton School Boys Band. Predeceased by his second wife M. Janice Turner, his parents, Henry M. (Bobs) and Thurza May Turner (Hobbins), and numerous aunts, Ivy Gray, uncles John M Turner (Ethel) and cousins Janis Turner (Betsy Kate) and Gordon Sheppard. Maurie exclaimed once, "We don't just have a family tree, we have a forest!" Left to mourn his passing are his sister Patricia Maureen Wells (Doren, Daniel, Dawn) and brother Brian (Dan, John, Sean, Shannon & Robert [deceased]), cousins Suzan Turner (Lauren), Louise Turner Clancy (Caitlin & Meghan), Bill Hobbins, Joan Hobbins-Podgurney, Diane Hobbins-LeDrew, Penny Demczak (Paul), Claire Whitaker (Paul), Edward Turner (Trish), Richard Turner, as well as many nieces, nephews and step-children Karen (Howie) , Catherine, and William (Jean) Hope. Special thanks to Dr. Valerie Cowan and the staff of the Saanich Peninsula Hospital, Extended Care #1, where Hank/Maurie had resided since March 2016. Cremation performed by Earth's Option, Victoria, BC. No service will be held, as per Hank's request, but a Celebration of Life will happen at a place and a time to be determined.
