In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
My father, like most vets, didn't talk about the war. In the early stages of his service he was in Naval Intelligence. He and a partner were trained in Ottawa and in Camp X in Ontario. They did code interception work (German code traffic to their ships and subs in the Atlantic) out of clandestine locations in eastern Canada .... in a back room in a bakery and in a phoney pumping station in the middle of a field. Dad asked to go into combat service and served on a submarine for literally a couple of days, then went onto a mine sweeper, HMCS WALLACEBURG, for a short time and then to HMCS LA HULLOISE. On that ship he was involved in communications and his action station was an Oerlikon gun. He was involved in a couple of black ops in Europe and did some work on intelligence gathering concerning the defences/obstacles on the D Day beaches. (Submitted by his son Thomas)
