Jack served in the RCNVR fro 1941 to 1945 as a Gunner. John's brother Lorne Stanley Kelsey died during the Second World War. John is listed in Lorne's service file as serving in HMCS NORANDA at the time of Lorne's death. His brothers Clifford Thomas Kelsey and Leonard Kelsey also served in the Navy.
