Robert Cowie MacLean

Commander, O-45170, RCN / C.A.F.

Died: 17 Jan 2021, Mississauga, Ontario

MacLEAN, Robert Cowie - It is with very heavy hearts but with appreciation for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Robert (Bob) MacLean, loving husband of the late Dorothy (Templeton) MacLean, at his residence in Mississauga on Sunday, January 17, 2021. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Bob lived a full and exciting life spanning 95 years.

Bob had a long career with the Royal Canadian Navy. After Officer training in Esquimalt, BC, he served during WWII escorting ships across the Atlantic. He went on to serve as a naval anti-submarine pilot, commanded HMCS ORIOLE, work with the US Atlantic fleet in Norfolk, Virginia, command the HMCS Shearwater anti-submarine squadron and was Commander of HMCS MARGAREE in Halifax, NS. He then spent a decade as Chief Fisheries Inspector for the Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries before retiring to Sidney, British Columbia and eventually moving to Mississauga Ontario.

He adored his wife Dorothy and missed her greatly when she passed after 59 years of marriage. Together they raised a family of four children, had many friends whom they entertained at bridge parties and special occasions, loved to garden, and in retirement travelled the world together. Bob was an avid golfer, and even had a pair of rubber golf boots that he could wear while playing on soggy courses during British Columbia winters.

Bob will be missed by his children, Bob (Chris) in Newfoundland, David (Susan) in Mississauga, Cam (Peter) in Saint John NB and Loralee (Scott) in Toronto as well as his grandchildren Tony, Heather and Alex. He is predeceased by his brother George Campbell (Cam) MacLean, and his sisters Isabelle (Lew) Miles, Alexandra (Buck) Buckingham and Georgette (Paul) Fee. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Elsie MacLean in Matlock MB and many nieces and nephews. His life will be celebrated at a private family service at a later date.

Anyone wishing to make donations could do so to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, which assisted him greatly during his later years. (Victoria Times Colonist 27 Jan 2021)
