Charles Edward Poole

Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class, RCN / C.A.F.

Born: 1937

Died: 26 Nov 2020, Lower Truro, Nova Scotia

POOLE, Charles Edward - age 83, of Lower Truro. With great sadness we announce the death of our dear husband, father, and grandfather, Charles Edward Poole, who passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on Thursday, November 26, 2020. Charles is survived by his cherished wife of 59 years, Joan (Van Buskirk); sons, Jeffrey (Tracey), Halifax; Peter (Gina Sampson), Antigonish; grandchildren, Charlee Lane (Kevin), St. John's, N.L.; Mallary Kehayes (Ian), Halifax; Malcolm and Grace Poole, Antigonish; brothers, Harry Poole (Phyllis) and David Farwell (Ann Giffin), Halifax. Charlie (known in the family as Sonny) was born to Harry and Harriett Poole in Halifax and had fond memories of growing up in the North End on Bilby Street.

Inspired by his experience in Sea Cadets, he became a proud member of the Royal Canadian Navy, serving for 24 years on numerous ships including HMCS BONAVENTURE, PRESERVER, and NIPIGON. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer, 2nd class, in 1980.

In retirement, he moved to Antigonish and then Truro, where he enthusiastically pursued numerous hobbies, "renovated" his houses, and served as a Commissionaire. He had wide-ranging interests and talents: photography, oil painting, cartooning, radios and electronics, car repair, history, movies, politics, and amateur chicken farming. In addition to being a wonderful husband and father, he greatly enjoyed outdoor activities with family and friends, especially hunting, fishing, kayaking, camping, and countless family gatherings where "Uncle Sonny" entertained generations of children.

Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Cora Duffy (Gerald) and Eleanor Cassidy (John); nephew, Barry Cassidy and Barry's wife, Janice. He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews, to whom he was especially close: Deborah Cassidy, Hamilton, Ont.; Judy Duffy (Lenny), Sharon Longard (Dave), Sandra Farwell (Marc), Bruce Duffy (Nancy), Graham Poole (Jackie), Edward Poole (Denise), Jeffrey Farwell (Angela), Jordan and David Giffin, and honorary nephew, Richard (Kelly) Lee, all of Halifax.

We are grateful for the outstanding care provided by Dr. Donald Rowe and Dr. Lori Wood, VON, and the entire team at Colchester East Hants Health Centre. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Colchester East Hants Health Centre Foundation or a charity of your choice.

Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to Mattatall - Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young St., Truro. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. (Halifax Chronicle-Herald 30 Nov 2020)
