Ernest Grant (Ernie) Giles

Died: 10 Oct 2004, Victoria, British Columbia

 

GILES, Ernest Grant (Ernie) - It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of Father, Grandfather and friend. He was predeceased by his wife, Eileen in 2002 and leaves to mourn his sons, Tim (Liz) and Richard (Bev) as well as his grand- children and family. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri and came with his parents to farm in Elkhorn, Manitoba. He joined the Navy in 1940 and reached the rank of Lieutenant. After the war he attended the University of Manitoba, United College and was then employed by General Motors for 33 years. His career advancement took him to Winnipeg, Edmonton and Toronto. He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge and was awarded a 50 year achievement in 2002. He was twice honored with the prestigious status as Master of the Blue Lodge. He was also a member of the Shrine belonging to the Janizaries marching unit. He was also an active member of the Kiwanis service organization and a long time member of the Uplands Golf Club. He enjoyed curling and volunteer work greatly in his retirement. The family would like to thank Dr. John MacPherson and the staff of B3 unit at the Lodge at Broadmead for their care and efforts to makehis passing peaceful. A memorial service will be held at St. David by the Sea Church, 5182 Cordova Bay Road, on Sunday October 17, 2004 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in remembrance to the charity of personal choice. (Victoria Times Colonist 13 Oct 2004)

 

Ernest Giles served in the RCNVR during WWII from 30 Dec 1940 to 30 Jun 1945, attaining the rate of PO LTO (O.N. V14315) before commissioning from the ranks. He attainted the rank of Lt, RCNVR. After the war he transferred to the RCN(R) and remained on the retired list until Jan 1960.

HMCS CHIPPAWA (retired list) as a Lt, RCN(R) (Navy List Jul 1952). Last noted in the Navy List for Jan 1960 as a Lt, RCN(R), HMCS Chippawa (ret'd list)
