HMCS
OJIBWA Museum Operation Paint EX 2020
Carried
out from 13 to 26 July 2020 in Port Burwell, Ontario
1. A total of $10, 205 was raised thru the 3 Branches of the SAOC, plus
donations from across Canada and the United States. To date we have expended
@ $5,000 of the monies raised, plus $1,000 has been set aside for “OP
Walter Pigeon Eviction 20-26 Sept which is the covering all areas that
the pigeons are using to gain entry into the fin and under the casing, plus
to pressure wash all the pigeon dropping away.
2.
There was approximately 130 volunteers from across Ontario and even one from
Nova Scotia that provide @ 260-person days of labour from 13 to 26 July
2020.
3.
Retired submariners, veterans and members of Team Rubicon, the Canadian
4.
Heroes Foundation, Eastern Ontario and the Canadian Forces volunteered to
help repaint the vessel, with volunteers travelling from Ottawa, Kingston,
Coburg, Oshawa, Peterborough, Hamilton, London, Port Dover and Niagara.
5.
We had numerous people that volunteered that had no association with the
military or the submarine, they just heard about the project thru social
media, friends, or family.
6.
We had families that show up to volunteer, and even had one father and his
10-year son come twice so that they could spend the night on board Ojibwa.
All volunteers were given a tour of Ojibwa during the lunch break.
7.
Team Rubicon Canada (Team Rubicon Canada unites skilled military veterans
with first responders to serve disaster-affected communities at home and
abroad) provide numerous volunteers from 20 to 25 July.
8.
Twelve members of the Highway of Heroes cleaning team drove down and joined
Team Rubicon with helping paint the sub for the day on 20 July. Among them
was Silver Cross mother, Port Hope resident Anna Loveman who said it was an
honour to drive over three hours to paint.
9.
We had exceptional weather during Paint EX. We only lost one day of painting
due to rain, but it was in the first week, so we used that day just to
pressure wash the exterior to prep for more painting. We also had a Tornado
Warning on the first weekend, so Ojibwa was used has a tornado shelter. We
did also have a couple of small rain showers over the period, but these
helped cool down the boat, as we could not paint when the hull temp was over
90F.
10.
Ceremonial pictures were taken of some of the Volunteers with a Bottle of
Wine pretending to dedicate the Ojibwa again after a job well done.
11.
Bravo Zulu to all involved.
