In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
CHAMBERS, Francis John (Frank) - Passed away in Nanaimo, B.C. age 67. Born in Hamilton, Ontario he was the son of Francis Chambers & Leena (Woodruf) Chambers. Married to Phylis (Boeckler) Chambers. Survived by three sons Phillip, Mike and Chris.
Frank & his family were transferred to England about 1960 where he did his submariner training in HMS Dolphin in Gosport. After serving in various RN Submarines he was transferred to Chatham, England to stand by the new Oberon Submarines that Canada were building. He was involved in building and commissioning the last of the three submarines which was HMCS Okanagan. Upon returning to Canada onboard Okanagan. He served in Halifax on all three Oberon's. He was then transferred to Ottawa.
After a couple years there he moved to Victoria where he was a pilot initially on the Pisces IV with the Department of Oceans and Fisheries. After a couple years the navy wanted to send him back to Halifax. Dad then left the navy but continued to work with the Pisces program and ended up running it until the program was shut down and he then retired.
After his death he was cremated by Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, Cedar Road, Cedar, B.C. He was not buried at this time. I sent them an email, responding by saying he was cremated but not buried in their Cemetery. His ashes were kept until his wife passed in 2019. A small portion of his ashes were spread in Pat Bay (just north of Victoria) where he worked with the Pisces IV, and both of their ashes were spread on Mount Maxwell on Salt Spring Island overlooking to Strait of Georgia. My mother didn't want a service so we had a small gathering at the funeral home with just our family and one close friend that worked with dad on the Pisces.
