GIBSON, Bryce Wesley - The time has come to say goodbye to our much loved head of the Gibson Clan. Bryce at 103 left us on Nov. 8 to be reunited with his wife Hazel. Bryce was born in Halifax on October 1, 1922, to parents Arthur and Irene (Carnell) Gibson. At an early age his mom passed away so both he and his sister Audrey were raised by stepmom Mary Gibson.

Bryce met Hazel at a very early age, he was in grade 4 and she was in grade 2. They married in 1943 and spent 80 years together before Hazel’s passing in 2023. Theirs was a love story made in heaven. They did everything together including raising four wonderful boys. In 1940 Bryce joined the Navy and served on the Prince Henry during the war. After he was discharged in 1946, he became an auto mechanic. He had his own service station on the corner of Windsor and North Street for a number of years. Eventually he became an Apprenticeship Counselor with the Province of Nova Scotia and travelled the province with his work. Both he and Hazel spent many hours volunteering. Having 4 boys to keep busy they started volunteering with the Cubs and Scouts. Bryce became District Commissioner for the North End area of Halifax. After his retirement he wasn’t about to sit idle. Bryce then went on to join The Masonic Lodge which led to joining the Shriners. And of course, Hazel was always by his side joining the Daughters of the Nile. He eventually had the distinction of becoming Potentate. During his years with the Shrine, he could usually be found in the basement of the Temple fixing donated wheelchairs so they could be given to anyone in need. At Hazel’s insistence Bryce also volunteered at the IWK with a combined total for both of over 50 years with the Volunteer Program. He was instrumental in helping set up the blood donor clinic at the IWK. Also, while at the IWK they both spent many hours with the “Read to Me” program. Both Bryce and Hazel played an integral part in changing the laws on “Couples in Long Term Care” in Nova Scotia ensuring that married couples would not be separated and could spend their remaining years together. This was quite an accomplishment for two people in their 90’s. Bryce’s legacy was his large family whom he loved dearly.

He is survived by sons Glenn (Barb) and Darrall (Judy); Daughters’ in Law, Lynn and Colleen.

Predeceased by his wife Hazel; sons Barry and Scott and sister Audrey.

Also survived by grandchildren: Julie (Tim), Ian (Kelly), Andrea (Andrew), Robert, David, Gregory (Amy), Michael (Sherry), Christopher (Danielle) and great-grandchildren: Adam, Keira, Jack, Holly, Brady, Connor, Noah, Quinn, Carson, Audrey, Sarah, Bryce, and Hayden.

Special Thanks to the many staff at Northwood Centre for their loving care over the last 6 years.

Both Bryce and Hazel will be laid to rest together. She has been waiting patiently for him. There will be a graveside service for family and friends at 11am, Nov. 22 at Camphill Cemetery , Summer Street entrance. Reception to follow at 41 Old Mill Road, Hammmonds Plains.
