BERGGREN, Waldo Leslie (Coke) - age 73, of Avondale, Hants County, passed away on Monday, September 30th., 2002, at the Q.E. II Health Sciences Centre, New Halifax Infirmary, Halifax. Born on February 28th., 1929, in Belmont, Hants County, Nova Scotia, he was a son of the late Roland and Christina (McClair) Berggren.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Canadian Navy on several ships (1951-53). While aboard the H.M.C.S. Iroquois, he was wounded and was the only survivor at his station. He was an avid runner and most recently attended the Poplar Grove Terry Fox Run, as he had for over 20 years. He, along with his wife Gail, owned and operated for several years, Berggren Grocery Store, Newport Landing. He was a member of the Hants County Branch #9, Royal Canadian Legion, Windsor. He enjoyed life to its fullest.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, the former Gail Frances Swinamer.
He was predeceased by his sister, Rolina Collard.
Cremation has taken place under the care of Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor, where visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, October 2nd., 2002. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 3rd., 2002, in the Avondale United Church, Avondale, with Rev. Marilyn MacDonald officiating. Interment in the Belmont Cemetery, Belmont, Hants County. Family flowers only, donations in his memory, may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society (Nova Scotia Division); the Avondale United Church or to a charity of ones choice. (Source: Find-a-Grave)
