In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
WARWICK, Donald Eric - It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Donald Eric Warwick, age 95, on June 28, 2025. Don was born in Aylmer Ontario July 9, 1929 to Samuel and Winnifred (Anger) Warwick, and was the last surviving member of his family.
Don was a member of the Royal Canadian Navy as a red seal chef, and retired after 25 years as a sergeant. During his time onboard the Assiniboine, he served as the personal chef for Governor General Roland Michener (and his wife) during their trip around Newfoundland. He was stationed in Hochelaga, Stadacona, and Shearwater. Don also served as a peacekeeper with the UN on a 6-month deployment to Cyprus.
Following retirement from the navy, Don worked for Cassibo Bus Lines, and as the front-line chef on oil rigs in Newfoundland and the Beaufort Sea. Don also owned and operated restaurants and diners in both Dartmouth and Eastern Passage.
Don (Duke), lived a full life of service! He was a very active and dedicated member of the communities of Eastern Passage and Cow Bay. He was 67-year member of Eastern Lodge 8686, the last charter member of the Royal Canadian Legion Caen Br. 164 and a 44-year member of the Lions Club, where he held many executive positions, and was known as Lion Duke. While serving as a Lion, Don received many recognitions, but the two he was most proud of are; the Presidents Award for Outstanding Leadership, and the Melvin Jones Fellow. Don was a valued member of the EPCB Benevolent Society of which he was just recently recognized for his service, and was an active parishioner of St. Peters Anglican church.
Don was also well known for his catering services. Although he ran his kitchens with a bark and a roar, his dedicated volunteers and staff always returned for the next job. He cooked and served countless numbers of roast beef dinners, pancake suppers, lobster dinners, and catered dozens of weddings, including for all his children.
Never to be idle, Don spent hours perfecting his gardens and working in his garage. He was a jack of all trades and was able to build or fix anything he put his mind to, including a blood pressure machine while recovering in a recent hospital stay. His nurses affectionally named him “MacGyver”. When he wasn’t busy completing his daily to do list, he loved to spend time at his camp Wyndenbug in Lake Charlotte. He continued to treat everyone there with his culinary skills, because camp food was the best!
Don’s greatest service was to his family. He worked tirelessly to provide for his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. If there was ever anything we ever needed, it was always available by C.O.D. – call on Duke. He and Doris provided the family and extended family members and friends with countless delicious home cooked meals and there was always room for one more at their table.
Besides his parents, Don was predeceased by his 8 brothers and sisters; Ray, Eugene, Gerry, and Jack and Irene, Phyllis, Donna and Patricia.
Don is survived by his loving and ever devoted wife of 72 years, Doris (Myers). His children Gerry (Lucy), Chris (Elaine), and Dawn Marie. His grandchildren Lily (Josh), Elizabeth (Tyler), Stephen (Candace), Dionne, Jeanine and Eric and great grandchildren Nadia (Deegan) and Nyla. Don is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Don was loved and appreciated by his family until the end and will be greatly missed.
The family would like to extend our sincere and heartfelt thanks to the medical and nursing staff of DGH and our sweet angel Candace.
Visitation will be held Sunday, July 27th at the Eastern Passage Community Funeral Home from 6-9pm. A celebration of life and legion service will be held Monday, July 28th, 2pm at the Royal Canadian Legion, Caen Br. 164, Main Road Eastern Passage.
