NEWELL, John Ainslie - It is with deep sorrow — but also profound gratitude — that we announce the passing of our beloved John Ainslie Newell, who left us peacefully on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at the age of 89, surrounded by love at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Born and raised in Westmount, Nova Scotia, John was the son of Jean MacDonald and John Leonard (Jack) Newell — and the beating heart of every room he entered from an early age. His deep roots in the Cape Breton community shaped the man he became: steadfast, kind, loyal, and full of spirit.

For nearly 57 years, John shared a devoted marriage with his wife Carole (Turner), his partner in every sense of the word. Together, they built a life full of laughter, commitment, and care. He was a loving and deeply proud father to his son Glen, and cherished Glen’s partner David as family. His was a love that showed up — loud and clear — whether through a firm handshake, a booming laugh, or a phone call just to check in.

John spent many years working with Sobey’s — or “the home stores,” as he affectionately called them — ultimately serving as District Manager. But his life’s work extended far beyond his career. He was a man of service, both formal and informal. John served as County Councillor for District #8 before being elected in 1982 as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Cape Breton the Lakes. Re-elected in 1984, he served in Premier John Buchanan’s Progressive Conservative government until 1988, representing his constituents with dedication and pride.

Before politics, John answered a different kind of call — serving five years in the Royal Canadian Navy. He spent 26 months aboard the aircraft carrier HMCS Bonaventure, an experience that remained close to his heart for the rest of his life. He continued his commitment to his fellow servicemen as a longtime member of Legion Branch 126 in Westmount and as Past President of the Cape Breton Naval Veterans Association. He also held roles as a Mason (Sydney Lodge 84) and as a Past Grand Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star of Nova Scotia and PEI (1999–2000). Wherever he served, he brought warmth, leadership, and a deep sense of camaraderie.

John’s faith and music were closely intertwined. A faithful member of Westmount United Church, he sang in the choir for over 40 years — his deep voice lifting hymns and hearts alike. He believed in singing loudly, living fully, and always making room at the table.

He was a passionate golfer and a longtime member of Lingan Golf and Country Club, where friendships were forged one swing and one story at a time. John was famous for his good humour on the course — and for his hole-in-one on #13, a moment he proudly celebrated for years to come (as did everyone who heard the story… which was everyone). And, of course, he remained a loyal Toronto Maple Leafs fan — a testament to his faith and perseverance.

John will be forever remembered for his big heart, his gregarious nature, and his ability to connect with anyone — whether it was through a story, a song, or a simple act of kindness. He made people feel seen, heard, and welcome.

He is survived by his beloved wife Carole; his son Glen (David) of Toronto; his brother David (Beatrice) Newell, Delaware; sisters Linda Crockett, Westmount, and Thelma Palmateer, Alberta; sister-in-law Beverley Turner, Glace Bay; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. He also leaves behind special friends Nancy and Greg MacDonald, Westmount; Ainslie, Brendan, Harper, and Maisie MacKinnon, Westmount; Ryan MacDonald, Westmount; Christopher (Karen) MacDonald, Coxheath; and Desiree Cable, PEI — each of whom he loved in the way only John could: fully and with joy.

He was predeceased by his parents Jean and Jack Newell; sisters Elizabeth (Betty) Lewis, Evelyn MacMillan, Jean (Doodie) Ginter, and Patricia (Pat) Hurlehey; his brothers-in-law Dr. Gerald Turner, Rev. Clayton Lewis, Sandy MacMillan, Ken Palmateer, Ed Ginter, and Frank Hurlehey; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Our family would like to express heartfelt thanks to Dr. Hodson and the many doctors and nurses at Cape Breton Regional Hospital’s CCU and 4B for their care and compassion. A special thank-you to the Osprey Angels, who watched over John with gentleness and grace in his final days.

John Ainslie Newell lived a life that was full, faithful, and unfailingly generous. We were lucky to know him — and even luckier to love him. He will be missed beyond words, but his laughter, loyalty, and love will echo in our hearts forever.

Cremation has taken place. Family and friends are welcome to attend and celebrate John’s life. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 4th from 6:00-9:00 PM at Sydney Memorial Chapel (49 Welton Street, Sydney). A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 5th at 11:00 AM in Westmount United Church (15 MacLennan Drive, Westmount), with Reverend Beth Hazelhurst officiating. A luncheon will follow the celebration of life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Westmount United Church or a charity of your choice.
