In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
WESTERBERT, Arnold Rudolph - Veteran of World War II, Served October 21, 1941 - March 12, 1970 Royal Canadian Legion Branch 351. Peacefully September, 1, 2014, at the age of 95. Predeceased six years to the day by his beloved wife and best friend of 62 years, Mary Frew Allan. Arnold was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, July, 22, 1919 to Inga Frank and Arvid Ernst Westerberg who were Swedish immigrants. Predeceased by his brother Gunnar Westerberg. Arnold served in Royal Canadian Naval Establishments and Ships in Canada, the U.S.A. and overseas. He was particularly proud of being selected to the commissioning crew of H.M.C.S. Warrior (Canada's first aircraft carrier) in January, 1946 at Belfast, Northern Ireland. It was while serving in HMCS Niobe, Greenock, Scotland, in 1945 that he met his wife to be, a V.A.D. in the British Red Cross. Arnold will be fondly remembered by niece Jean Allan (Soles) and her daughter Jarah of London, Ontario, Paul Soles and their son Jonathan of Toronto, niece Andrea Allan Tallo (George) of Glenrothes, Fifeshire, Scotland, his nieces and nephews in Scotland and England, by his many cousins in Sweden and special friends Goran & Karin Johansson of Flasa, Sweden. Special thanks to Senga & Hector Allan, Molly & Don Downie, Angele Poitras, & Bruno & Mary Ganske, all of Ottawa, for their friendship & especially to Jennifer Stiell for her enduring respect & loyalty to Arnold and Mary, particularly in Arnold's last years. Heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Ottawa 2 East Wing of the Perley & Rideau Veterans' Health Centre for their kind & compassionate care. A graveside service will be held at the National Military Cemetery, 289 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa, Ontario on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Arnold's memory to the or the Ottawa Humane Society would be appreciated.
