In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
VASSOS, John (Jack) - was born in Regina on January 25, 1928, and passed away in North Vancouver on October 30, 2014, following a tough battle with Parkinson's Disease, which he attacked with characteristic optimism and tremendous resilience. Jack was predeceased by his mother (Norma Doreen), father (Gus Constantine) and brothers, Hugh and Gordon, and is survived by his brothers Don (Deb) and Joe (Darlene); ex-wives Mona (Spearey) and Fran; sons Troy (Lesley), Miles (Eileen), and Dino; stepson Tynan; grandchildren, Nolan, Christian, Damon, Paige, and Mariah; by his many nieces and nephews, and good friend Bev. He grew up with his four brothers in Regina and Melville, Saskatchewan, and later served in the Canadian Navy between 1945 and 1950 as a radio operator on board the HMCS Crescent based out of Victoria, BC. Following his service Jack returned to Melville where he became the editor for the Melville Advance, and was a photo journalist and bureau manager for the Regina Leader Post until 1965, when he and his wife, Mona (Spearey) moved their young family to North Vancouver. Jack joined Gordon Black Publishing as a photo journalist, and subsequently won a North American industrial publication award while working as an editor for Finning Tractor. He then made a career shift and became a prominent real estate agent on the North Shore, eventually retiring from Sussex Realty. Jack occupied his retirement as an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 118) and the Drum Band, and was always proud of his service in the navy and very proud of his Greek ancestry. He was also a very kind and gentle man who loved the sea and dreamed of sailing around the world. Jack's family would like to thank the wonderful staff and caregivers at Kiwanis Care Centre in North Vancouver where "Uncle Jack" has lived his past 5 years. Jack's ashes will be scattered over the ocean at a celebration of life gathering in the late spring. Please contact the family for further information. (North Shore News 05 Nov 2014)
