SHUTTLEWORTH, Leonard Martin - A gentle man, a loving man, Mr. Leonard Martin Shuttleworth has left cherished memories in many hearts! Len passed away peacefully surrounded by family at his home, Residence on the Thames, on September 6th, 2013. Born February 23rd, 1925, in Chatham, cherished son of the late George and Vera (nee Clarke) Shuttleworth. Beloved husband of 65 years to the late Verlyn (2011). Loving father of the late Gary Shuttleworth (April 2013) and Christine of Sarnia, Leonard Wayne and Diane of Half Moon Bay, B.C., Karen Herman and Robert of Blenheim, and Brad and Chrystal of Lindsay. Cherished Papa to 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchild and 1 great great grandchild. Survived by his sister Blanche Foster of London and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his sisters Helen and Lois, and brother Clifford Shuttleworth, brother-in-law Harold Foster and grandson Todd Shuttleworth. Proudly serving his country in World War II, Len sailed in the frigate HMCS Stone Town where his Navy duty called him to The Battle of the Atlantic. His ships bell can be found today displayed in the St. Mary’s museum. Upon his return to Canada, Len found many jobs to sustain his family including Jacksons Bakery, where he drove his horse drawn wagon through the streets of Chatham, delivering fresh baked goods to the many families. The mainstay of his career was 32 years long at International Harvester (later named Navistar). The majority of those years he worked as general labourer on the line however the last few years he moved into the role of supervisor of the Inspection Department. Upon retirement, Len worked part-time as Chatham Courthouse, Court Clerk. For a short time, he also managed the custodial duties at St. Andrews United Church. As a volunteer, he enjoyed working with our youth in a leadership role with Scouts Canada. As well Len was dedicated to family and friends should they need a ride to appointments or meetings. As a devoted member of St. Andrews United Church, he served on Session. The Couples Club was where Len and Verlyn enjoyed many of their friends. He was a member of the Chatham and District Royal Canadian Naval Association. Proudly marching, in honour of his fallen comrades. Family and friends and are invited to the Alexander & Houle Funeral Home, 245 Wellington West, Chatham, on Monday September 9th visiting from 2 to 4 p.m. And 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service for Mr. Leonard Shuttleworth will be conducted from the chapel of the funeral home on Tuesday September 10th at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Mark Perry of St. Andrew’s United Church officiating. Interment Union Cemetery, Pardoville. Friends planning an expression of remembrance are asked to consider the Legion Poppy Fund and the Chatham Kent Community Foundation A special thank you goes to the wonderful staff and friends of The Residence on the Thames
