RUTTAN, Raymond David Galway - Passed peacefully on Saturday, December 6, 2014, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 83. Beloved husband of Pat for over 63 years. Loving father of Allen (Josie). Devoted grandfather of Holly (Cory Murphy) and Nicholas (Karina). Cherished great-grandfather of Kyle, Connor, Cassidy, Hudson, Crosby, Reid, Kourtney and Hadley. Predeceased by his ten siblings. Raymond will be deeply missed by many nieces, nephews and extended family in Nova Scotia and Ontario. Born in Prince Edward County, Ont. on January 26, 1931, Raymond left his home in Ontario and took up a career with the Royal Canadian Navy at the age of 20. Shortly after basic training, he was sent to the H.M.C.S. Haida and sailed to Korea where he became a veteran of the Korean War. He was very honored to have served for his country in the Korean War and would get very emotional when he spoke of it, even though his words were few. He served for the next 20 years in peacetime and retired as a Chief Petty Officer 1st class as an Underwater Weapons Specialist. Upon retiring from the Navy, Raymond worked for Scotiabank as Manager of Central Services at the main branch in Halifax, after which he worked for a brief period for Canada Post and then finished his working days with IMP Aerospace Division as a Contracts Manager working on contracts for military aircraft. Health issues forced him into permanent retirement. Raymond became very interested in helping in his community, and interacting with the people there, and joined the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 165 where he eventually became President of the Legion after serving on the building committee with his son, Allen and his longtime friend and Past President, Bill Munroe. Raymond also was a member and Past Master of Uniacke Lodge No. 128 A.F. & A.M. Through his interest in Freemasonry, Raymond became involved with related fraternities and was Past High Priest of George S. Wright No. 27, Super Excellent Master Council Adoniram No. 10, Knight’s Templar Mt Zion No. 73, Knight of York Valley No. 165, and was Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priest of Order of the Secret Monitor Conclave No. 6. Although he would never talk about these fraternities openly, it was clear that these fraternities gave him a lot of comfort and peace and he loved the social interaction with these members. A Masonic service for Raymond will take place on Thursday in Atlantic Funeral Home Sackville Chapel, 125 Sackville Dr., at 2 p.m. followed by an Anglican funeral service in the Chapel. For those wishing, donations to Children’s Wish Foundation in honour of Raymond can be made. Raymond loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly and just plainly loved children and people in general. Donations in lieu of flowers would have pleased him greatly. He was a very kind and generous man and will be sadly missed by all.
