In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
PITTMAN, Ernest Chesley (Ernie) - Age 76, of Halifax, died October 9, 2014, after a long battle with cancer. He faced his illness with courage and grace, always keeping an upbeat outlook and a smile on his face. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1957 as an aircraft mechanic and spent his military career based at CFB Shearwater, making several trips aboard HMCS Bonaventure. After retiring in 1977, he worked for St. John Ambulance before moving into the field of Occupational Health and Safety with the Workers Compensation Board and then the Government of Nova Scotia. He spent many years volunteering with the Sea Cadets, Emergency Measures Organization, and St. John Ambulance, becoming Provincial Commissioner for three years. Ernie was a welcoming, friendly man whose genuine interest in others endeared him to many. Besides his family and friends, his passions in life were teaching, hunting, fishing, beachcombing, and in later years, painting. Ernie walked through life hand in hand with his wife of 54 years, Marie, whom he adored, and who stood by him and cared for him during every moment of his five year struggle. He was predeceased by his sister, Ina Norman; brothers, Alfred and Stanley. He is also survived by his sons, Jim Pittman (Elaine Gilbert), Steve Pittman (Cherie Kinnear), and Darren Pittman (Amanda Borden), and his beloved grandchildren, Jason, Ashley, Nicole, Jeff, Jake, Kellina, and five great- grandchildren. He is also survived by brother, Will and sister, Mary (George). A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14, in Our Lady of Assumption Chapel at 12 Wing Shearwater. A reception will follow in Shearwater Aviation Museum. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sisters of Charity Ministry Fund, 215 Seton Rd., Halifax, NS.
