MACFARLANE, James Albert - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of James Albert Macfarlane on May 17, 2025, at Dartmouth General Hospital, just days after celebrating his 94th birthday.

Born in Toronto, Ontario, Jim was the beloved son of Beatrice Evelyn (Boyes) and Alexander Macfarlane. He attended Vaughan Road Collegiate Institute from 1945 to 1947, where he was a proud member of both the football and track teams.

A life defined by service and devotion, Jim began his military journey early, joining the Non-Permanent Active Militia (NPAM) with the RCASC in 1943. He later transferred to the Queen’s Own Rifles in 1947, and then joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1948. Over the course of his distinguished career, Jim served across Canada and internationally (Quebec, France, Germany, Egypt, and Manitoba). He played football and basketball for various base teams, and in France, he proudly competed in the first Air Division Grey Cup Europe.

In 1971, he was transferred to HMCS Fraser for a tour of duty at sea and later posted to CFB Halifax, where he concluded his military career as a Warrant Officer in 1982. After retiring from the RCAF, Jim continued his public service with the federal government, working with the Department of National Defence, Energy, Mines and Resources, and Parks Canada until his second and final retirement in 1992.

Jim had a deep love for music. He played baritone horn in Air Force marching bands, and sang in church choirs. He was a gifted storyteller, a lover of good scotch, and a man known for his towering 6’7” frame and even bigger heart—earning him the nickname “Tiny.”

While posted in Halifax, Jim met the love of his life, Carrie (Fillmore) Kirby-Macfarlane, who became his cherished wife and lifelong partner. Together, they embraced the joys of retirement as snowbirds in Florida, creating lasting memories with friends and family.

Jim was predeceased by his beloved wife Carrie in 2016, his brother Alec (1988), and his dear sister Evelyn Glen (2024). He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, survived by his daughter Darlene (John) Morrissey of Dartmouth, NS; and son John (Katie) Kirby of Saint Charles, IL. He was the proud Grampie to seven grandchildren: Taylor (Dylan) MacGillivray, Kingston (Nancy Gomes) Morrissey, Hunter (Mikaila Cariou) Morrissey, Nicole Morrissey, Carlie (Dominic) Bergeron, Sheena Kirby, Danielle Kirby, and John (McKenna Lievrouw) Kirby. Jim was also blessed with three great-grandchildren: Carrie and Cassidy MacGillivray, and Remy Bergeron.

Visitation will take place Monday, May 26, from 6-8pm in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, a Funeral Service to celebrate Jim’s life will be held, Tuesday, May 27, at 2:00pm, followed by a reception, in the same location.

Jim will be remembered for his dedication, humour, kindness, and unwavering love for his family and country and he will be dearly missed.
