In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
McFARLANE, Alan Wilson - With serenity and joy, we celebrate the life of Alan Wilson McFarlane, who lived his 86 years to the fullest and passed away on April 19, 2025. He taught us to grow with confidence, reclaim love, value facts, and in his final days, showed us that dying, though difficult, is a natural part of life. Born on July 2, 1938, in Glasgow, Scotland, Alan was the only son of Robert and Minnie Wilson. He attended Hutchison's Grammar School for Boys and had a special love for ancient Latin. His passion for the sea led him to join the Royal Navy in 1958, where he travelled extensively, including to the Persian Gulf. He later joined the Canadian Navy and, after serving aboard HMCS Saskatchewan, settled in Victoria, BC. A UBC Commerce graduate, Alan built a successful career as a portfolio manager and investment advisor, eventually founding his own firm. He met Eleanor, and together they raised three daughters: Fiona, Carol (Pary Bell), and Petra (Alex Ross). A lifelong sailor, Alan was a proud member of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, serving as Master Gunner and on the Vic-Maui Race Committee in the 1990s. In later years, he was a member of the Victoria Union Club. At both, he was known for hosting spirited Robbie Burns dinners in his McFarlane tartan kilt. He adored his grandchildren - Sienna, Stryder, Teagan, and Daxton - gifting quirky books, attending soccer games, and brunching at White Spot. Alan's wish was for his ashes to be committed to the sea through the RVYC 8 Bells Society. (The Globe and Mail 03 May 2025)
