In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
HALIKOWSKI, Ellen A. (née LANG) - After a life well lived it is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Ellen Adeline (Lang) Halikowski. Ellen was predeceased by her parents Gordon and Ellen (Nilsson) Lang, her beloved husband Hal (Gerald), her siblings Art (Kay), Lyall, Bud (George) (Polly) and Ida (Walter) Gerber, and her son-in-law John. She is survived by her children Natashia (Ken Drabinsky), Diana Dewar, Jim (Leslie) Halston, her much loved grandchildren Cole, Ellen and Mitchell and her sister-in-law Beryl. Ellen was born in Sioux Lookout, ON and grew up in Winnipeg, MB during the dirty 30s graduating from Kelvin High School and the Success School of Business. During WWII she joined the WRCNS as a writer and rejoined during the Korean conflict. She was one of the first women to be granted a permanent commission in the WRCNS serving in HMCS Chippewa, NHQ Ottawa, HMCNAS Shearwater and HMCS Naden. After the hard child rearing years of a navy wife were completed she volunteered with the Canadian Red Cross, the CNIB and finally with the VGH Auxilliary where she served as the president. Mum was a hardy soul always ready to raise a glass at the end of a busy day and a fine example of a daughter from Canada's greatest generation. (Victoria Times Colonist 07 Sep 2018)
Ellen's husband, Gerald (Hal) Halikowski served in the RCNVR during the Second World War and RCN post Second World War.
