RUTHERFORD, Clark Anderson, LCdr, RCN, MPK - 13 Sep 1942, HMCS OTTAWA - Son of Stewart Fleming Rutherford and Gertrude Jessie Rutherford, of Westmount, Quebec. Husband of Marjorie Rutherford of Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Lieutenant Commander Clark Anderson Rutherford, RCN, 28-year-old commanding officer of HMCS Ottawa was torpedoed Canadian destroyer, was well known in Ottawa, having visited the Capital frequently before he joined the navy. Lieut. Commander Rutherford is listed as missing, believed killed in action. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Stuart F. Rutherford of Westmount, Que., Commander Rutherford was born in that city and joined the navy in 1933 after he graduated from the Royal Military College at Kingston. Clarke Anderson of 152 Manor Road, Rockcliffe, is an uncle, and Mrs. Charles W. Hall, 405 Elgin Street, an aunt. His grandfather, the late William Anderson, was at one time a prominent official of the J. R. Booth Company.
LCdr Rutherford ed when HMCS OTTAWA H60 was torpedoed and sunk by U-91 on 13 Sep 1942. Of her crew of 175, plus 50 survivors they had picked up, there were only 69 survivors. Clark Rutherford Memorial School in Nova Scotia is named in his honour.
