In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
WOOD, John Ernest - It is with great sadness that the family of John Ernest Wood announces his passing on the evening of Jan 18th, 2023.
A devoted husband and loving father, John was 91 years old and is survived by his daughter Susan Wood (Bob) of Ottawa, Ontario; son Andrew Wood (Jackie) of Langley, B.C.; and daughter Irene Wood (Pete) of Whistler, B.C. John will be missed by his grandchildren Jonathan, Genevieve, Jessica, Tonnyiel, Erin, Cassandra, Natalie, and Ian as well as eight great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Lolly Wood after more than sixty-four years of happy marriage. John was also predeceased by his brother Frank of Toronto, Ontario and will be mourned by his brother George of Carleton Place, Ontario.
Born in Toronto, Ontario on December 6th, 1931 to Dick and Irene Wood, John left Danforth High School to join the Royal Canadian Navy in 1949. Serving aboard the aircraft carrier HMCS Magnificent until 1954, John returned to Toronto after his navy stint.
It was then that he met a young lady from Belfast, Northern Ireland and quickly fell in love, then married, Lolly. Soon after, John joined the Royal Canadian Regiment and went to Germany with his bride, where they started their family.
Upon returning to Canada, John remustered into the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps and spent the next sixteen years at bases in Ontario, retiring as a sergeant in 1974.
In 2002 John and Lolly embarked on their "final adventure": to move from Tillsonburg, Ontario to Comox, B.C. Although a lifelong Toronto Maple Leafs fan, John had learned to love the Vancouver Canucks as well.
John and Lolly loved their time spent in B.C., filling their days with knitting, cards, golfing, sightseeing, and socializing at the senior's centre. John and Lolly eventually moved into Casa Loma in Courtenay where they were loved by all for their gregarious affability and generosity.
After Lolly's passing, John moved into Berwick Retirement Community in Comox where he enjoyed his final years, playing cards and socializing with his fellow residents who will miss him dearly.
John Wood was that rare man of whom no one spoke ill.
A celebration of life will be held for John this spring. (The Comox Valley Record 18 Jan 2023)
