In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar

Ian Lancelot (Hoppy) Hopkins

Royal Navy

Born: 04 Jun 1935, Wicklow, Ireland

Died: 29 Mar 2022

HOPKINS, Ian Lancelot (Hoppy) - Ian's long journey took him from his birthplace in Wicklow, Ireland to Parksville, BC where he lived for the past 17 years.
In between, he had a remarkable ride and loved to share stories of his varied experiences.

Serving with the Royal Navy, it is believed that he was the oldest surviving former submariner in Canada. He immigrated in 1955 to Toronto with his first wife, Stella and daughter and pursued a sales career working for several different companies, moving to London, Ontario in the early '60's.

On a business trip to British Columbia he fell in love with the West Coast and relocated with Stella to Tsawwassen where he continued in sales until the early 70's.

He was resourceful, inventive, and enjoyed working with his hands. His independent spirit led him to take the plunge, buying ten acres in the Comox area and becoming self-employed. He did woodworking and had a hobby farm, raising chickens, goats and blueberries.

In his early retirement he met his second wife Rose in Yuma. For many years they spent winters there and summers in BC. After selling the farm and moving to Parksville, Ian volunteered in the community with Meals on Wheels and many knew "Hoppy" through seniors' activities. He turned his creative talents to writing over the past decade and enjoyed the encouragement and friendship of the Tale Spinners group.

Ian was predeceased by former wives Stella and Rose and siblings, Arnold, Don and Eleanor.

His daughter and son-in-law, Pauline and Derrill Prevett of Qualicum Beach, BC wish to thank the Palliative Care Team of Oceanside Hospice for their compassionate care when Ian was overtaken by cancer in his last days. The support of great VIHA nurses and care aides enabled him to live life on his terms, at home, until very recently.

Missing him also are many friends and extended family on both sides of the Atlantic.

A date to gather and celebrate Ian has yet to be determined.

Those who knew him won't soon forget him.

He was an original.
