Born: 03 May 1920, Solsgrith, Manitoba

Died: 13 Dec 2011, Merritt, British Columbia

MOUNTAIN, Norman - Son of Robert and Dorothy (née Dickinson) Mountain, he was born in Solsgirth, Manitoba. When the war came along, he enlisted for service with the Royal Canadian Navy. Shortly afterwards, he was approached and invited to sign up with the Canadian army, in the prestigious “Princess Pat’s” contingent. Too late! He was going to be a sailor. I believe he was in Alberta at the time, so this is where he enlisted. His training began in Calgary. As a signalman, he learned Morse code, flag signals, etc. He did additional training in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, and also spent time on Vancouver Island, working on tankers along the West Coast. He was then transferred closer to the front, to Glasgow, and then to Southhampton, serving as signalman on a Motor Torpedo Boat MTB 727. He was based out of Oostend, but fortunately his vessel was out on patrol on the fateful day of the big explosion in the harbour there.
