In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
PIMLOT, Norman Arthur - Our loving father, Norman Pimlott, passed away peacefully at home in the Veteran's Lodge at Broadmead, Victoria, with family by his side on Saturday, January 21st, 2023. He will be greatly missed by his three children, Phil (Lee) Pimlott, Colleen (Bob) Marsel and Sue (Bill) Pechtel, together with six grandchildren, Dr. Bryan Pimlott, Donna (Karri) Pimlott, Sarah Richards, Janice (Chad) Roberts, Romy (Michael) Marsel and Mathew (Brittney) Pechtel, as well as three great-grandsons Alex, Aidan and David Pimlott, and great-granddaughters, Paige Holmes, Nadine and Sarah Maier and Charlotte and Elliot Pechtel.
Dad was born on July 4th, 1925, in Victoria, BC. (The Pimlott family arrived in Strawberry Vale in 1902, then moved to Royal Oak in 1912 where they operated Pimlott Bros. General Store and Post Office at 4520 West Saanich Road). Norm was the youngest and the last surviving of seven children of James and Louisa Pimlott. After joining the Reserve Army in June 1939, he joined the Navy at 17 years of age and was soon off to Sydney, NS. Dad served 3 1/2 years on the Atlantic with HMCS GATINEAU, HMCS SASKATOON, and HMCS TROIS-RIVIÈRES. After the war, he started a company with his friend and went to the law offices of Berkeley Monteith for legal advice. Here he met "the love of his life" and loving partner, Ruth Henderson. They were married in Victoria at Centennial United Church on July 5th, 1947, and were married for 68 years. Sadly, Ruth passed away on January 12th, 2016.
From
Dad's humble beginnings as a coal deliverer, his cordial personality and
strong work ethic garnered success in his working career, primarily in
sales. In 1959, he became a popular figure within Oak Bay Village as an
owner of Henderson's Food Market. During his eleven years at the grocery
store, he volunteered for a number of different charities and service groups
including: Greater Victoria Silver Threads Organization as a Director, then
President; assisted with the first-ever "Operation Trackshoes" at
UVIC; and was a Member and President of Oak Bay Kiwanis, where his major
initiative was the building of Oak Bay Kiwanis Manor. He was also a
dedicated member of the Oak Bay United Church, where he served as an Elder
and Sunday School Teacher, as well as many years on the Board of Centennial
United Church. In 1969, he ran successfully for Alderman on Oak Bay Council
and served the municipality for ten years. During this timeframe, the
Council was successful in building the Oak Bay Senior Citizens Centre, Oak
Bay Library, Henderson Park Pavilion, and Oak Bay Recreation Centre. In
1970, he joined North American Life, earning his Canadian Life Underwriters
"CLU" designation and working as an Estate Planner for nine years.
Given his Military background and his dedicated service to the community, he
received an Appointment as a Member of the Veterans Pension Review Board in
Ottawa in 1979. He served as a Member for eight years, before becoming the
Deputy-Chairman in 1987 and finally the Chairman in 1990. He was the only
non-bilingual, non-lawyer, Western Canadian to ever be appointed to the
position of Chairman and was very proud of the significant growth in Review
Board Disability Claim Approvals, combined with the dramatic reduction in
Approval timeframes under his leadership. He was also proud of the fact that
he was able to write and Chair thousands of decisions for disability
benefits on behalf of his fellow Veterans, their wives, widows, and
dependents.
Norm will always be remembered by those closest to him for his generosity, passion, love of God, great sense of humour, and above all else, a loving dedication to his close-knit family. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Time to rest Dad, you've earned it.
A funeral service will be held at Centennial United Church, at 612 David Street, Victoria on Saturday, the 25th day of February at 1:00 pm. Rev. Alanna Menu will be officiating, followed by a reception in the church hall. Private Interment at Royal Oak Burial Park to follow at a later date.
The family wishes to thank friendly staff from Amica Beechwood and the caring nurses at Veteran's Broadmead Lodge.
