Charles Harvey Jones

Lieutenant Commander (WHA), RCN(R)

Born: 1929, St. Vital, Manitoba

Died: 06 Sep 2020, Winnipeg, Manitoba

JONES, Charles Harvey - Born and raised in St. Vital, Winnipeg, MB, Harvey is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Lorraine, along with his family and grandchildren: Allyson (Ernie, daughters, Sophie and Amélie), Kevin (Renee, son Sam), David (Ellen, daughters, Nicole and Natalie), and Leah (her partner and children). Harvey was predeceased by his parents, Ida and Charles, sister Sylvia and brother Trevor. Harvey worked in the Canadian oil industry and then in the industrial chemical sector until his retirement in 1993. His career allowed him to develop many great friendships throughout Western Canada and Ontario. Along the way, Harvey touched many people with his strong belief in fairness and respect for the individual, lessons he taught by example to his children. Harvey maintained a life-long commitment to the Royal Canadian Navy. He started as a sea cadet and played in the Sea Cadet Band which enabled him to travel across Canada. Harvey undertook training through the University Naval Training Division, proudly served with the HMCS GRIFFON, and ultimately achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve. Harvey was a proud student of United College Collegiate (University of Winnipeg) and the University of Manitoba, sharing his treasured memories of meeting Lorraine at school, and of the many friendships he maintained for a lifetime. As a member of the United Church of Canada, he enjoyed volunteering through its many outreach programs. Harvey loved camping and canoeing with his family, and enjoyed summer holidays exploring Canada. He had a passion for woodwork, which he used to create beautiful furniture, children's toys and backyard fences complete with portals for neighbour children to say hello and share a conversation with him. As a life-long learner, Harvey loved to read and keep up on current events. He also could never turndown a good spy novel. His family and friends enjoyed his spirited conversations of worldly topics, and will miss his enthusiasm, intellect and fair perspective. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, memorial and interment services will be held privately. Many thanks to the caring staff at Leduc Community Hospital and Dr. Michael Yan. Harvey's family asks that donations be made in his memory to Diabetes Canada or the Bissell Centre. (Winnipeg Free Press 12 Sep 2020)
