Born: 12 Jan 1916, Tizzard's Harbour, Newfoundland

 

Died: 31 May 2010, Halifax, Nova Scotia

 

BURT, Harvey R. - passed away at the QE II on Monday, May 31, 2010. after a brief illness. Born Tizzard's Hrb. NL, 12 Jan 1916 to Mark and Melinda Burt. Moved to Lewisporte and Corner Brook, NL at a very early age. On graduation from Memorial University, taught in Public School for five years before becoming a Marine Engineer. Joined the Canadian Navy at Halifax in 1940. Served on various ships from 1940 to the end of World War II, mostly on Convoy duty on North Atlantic, Caribbean and European waters. Retired as CPO Marine Engineer. Engineering education consisted of Danforth Tech., Toronto, Marine Engineering School, Esquimalt BC, NS Tech, SAIT, Alberta. Joined DND as Power Plant Engineer responsible for Power Plants and Mechanical Systems at Atlantic Coast Naval establishments, retiring as DND Senior Utilities Officer. He then formed a partnership in a Mechanical/ Electrical Engineering Consulting Firm, was National President and Life Member of the Institute of Power Engineers; President of the MS Society and a member of the Scotia Branch Legion. Fraternal affiliations were: Master of the Loyal Orange Lodge & Preceptory, Lewisporte NL, Life Member of Burn's Lodge #10 AF &AM, Life member of 32 degrees AASR, active member of Philae Shriners AAONMS and the Royal Order of Jesters, CRT 155.He was a member of Rockingham United Church. Survived by wife Mildred, sister Jennie Hackett, NL, daughters Donna (Alan) Schnare Hfx., Brenda Collicutt Bedford, sons Wayne (Linda) Dartmouth, Barrie (Darlene) USA, Grandchildren Andrea ,Andrew, Mark and Caleb, four Great Grandchildren and Step Daughter Judy (David) Edwards, Truro,. Step Granddaughters Shannon, Nicole and four great grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at Rockingham United Church, 2pm, Monday June 7th, Rev. Allen Darby officiating. Visitation will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax, on Sunday, June 6th, from 2- 5pm. Masonic Service at 3:30pm. Family flowers only. Donations to the Shriner's Crippled Children's Travel Fund or a charity of your choice.
