Hallen was born in Oyster Pond, Nova Scotia, the son of George and Cecelia Warnell. He had 4 sisters and 2 brothers: Edith (Mrs. Philip Myers), Jeddore; Effie (Mrs. Ernest Warner), Dartmouth; Alice (Mrs. R.C. Dares), Dartmouth; Sadie (Mrs. L.B. Horne - Corporal L.B. Horne, R.C.E.); Dennis Danial Warnell (RNCVR), and George Warnell
Hallen married Mary Ethel Castle (of New York, NY) in Halifax on 05 Mar 1917.
