Robert Anthony (Tony) McCabe

Died: 22 Dec 2002, Halifax, Nova Scotia

 

 

McCABE, Robert Anthony (Tony) - It is with much sadness that the McCabe family announces the death of Tony, after a long battle with prostate cancer on December 22, 2002, in Halifax. Born in Quebec province in 1933 and educated in Montreal and Beechgrove, Que. Tony enlisted in the RCN as an Ordinary Seaman in 1953, served on submarines, ships and establishments of the RCN/CAF and the Royal Navy until his retirement in 1982. He is survived by his wife, Jean (Lihou); son, Bob; daughter-in-law, Katherine (Bachus); young grandson, Alexander; stepdaughter, Maureen Bala, Ontario; stepson, Duncan, Inuvik, N.W.T. Tony will also be missed by his close friends, Sherman and Lionel. Tony was a founding member of the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis ALS Society of Nova Scotia and served as the society's president. He was a National Vice President of the ALS Society of Canada and a life member of the Submarine Association of Canada (Eastern Branch). Tony was an avid book collector, gardener and fond of international traveling. Cremation has taken place and according to Tony's wishes his ashes will be scattered upon the seas that he respected and appreciated so much. No visitation, however a celebration of Tony's life will be held on January 14, 2003, at 1400 hours in St. Brendan's Chapel, CFB Halifax, Rev. Frank Ralph officiating. A reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice. "Suppose me dead! /And then suppose a club assembled at the Rose; /Where, from discourse of this and that, /I grow the subject of their chat. /And while they toss my name about, /With favoursome and some without, /One quite indifferent to the cause /My character impartial draws...Swift.
