SMITH, Donald Borden - age 84 of Lower Sackville passed away peacefully on Monday, April 15, 2019, in the QEII Halifax Infirmary surrounded by family. He was the son of Orville and Mona Smith of Arnprior, Ontario. He joined the navy when he was 17 and retired 25 years later at 42. He served on many warships including HMCS Bonaventure. He loved telling stories of his time in the navy with humour and fondness. Everyone who knew him, will always remember his great sense of humour. His second career was storesman at Canada Post until he fully retired from there. For decades, Don was an avid stamp collector and also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He and his beloved wife, Mary, volunteered at the Beacon House food bank in Lower Sackville for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus where he made many good friends. He will be deeply missed by his daughter Lin (Tim Segulin); daughter-in-law Diane Smith; cherished grandfather of Ally, Marissa, Danielle, Evan, Sarah, great-granddaughter Brinley. Dear brother of sisters Betty, Nancy (Chris Mandin), Penny (Bill Curnock), Wendy; sister-in-law Carleen; many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his beloved wife Mary, son Kevin; brothers Robert, Terry; brothers-in-law Gordon Amos, Donald Tessier. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 24 from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at T.K. Barnard Funeral Home, 85 Sackville Cross Road. A funeral mass will be on Thursday, April 25 at 2 pm at St Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Fall River. A reception will follow in the church. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, Beacon House Food Bank in Lower Sackville, or a charity of choice in his memory would be appreciated. (Bernard Funeral Home)
