DUXBURY, John Howard - of Porters Lake, passed away peacefully in The Birches Nursing Home, Musquodoboit Harbour. Originally from Hamilton, Ont., John joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1958. He served for 13 years, and was on HMCS CAYUGA, CHAUDIERE, ASSINIBOINE and KOOTENAY (twice) until 1971. He then started John H. Duxbury Wood working Company which operated until 2004 when he suffered a massive stroke and was sad to close up the business that he enjoyed so much. John was a son of the late Bert and Vera (Brooks) Duxbury. He is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Etta (Maillet) Duxbury; his daughters, Nancy (Carlos) Duxbury Carreiro, Livramento, Portugal; and Karen (Derek) Mahoney, Boutiliers Point; sister, Ruth (John) McWilliams, St. Catharines, Ont.; and sister-in-law, Thelma (late Harold) Duxbury, Hamilton, Ont. John was predeceased by brother, Harold; and sisters, Norma, Velma, Barbara, and Bonnie. Before his stroke, John enjoyed fishing with his friends or just boating around Porters Lake and in the Atlantic Ocean. John's family would like to thank the staff at The Birches for the special care he received during his three years living there - "our John" - we know he was a handful. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Rowlings Funeral Home, Musquodoboit Harbour, where visitation will take place on April 23rd from 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Gordon MacLean at 10 a.m. on April 24th in St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, 8 Park Rd., Musquodoboit Harbour, followed by a reception in St. Anselm's Church Hall, 7037 Hwy. 207, West Chezzetcook. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory may be made to The Birches Nursing Home, 7702 Highway 7, Musquodoboit Harbour, NS B0J 2L0. (Halifax Chronicle-Herald 20 Apr 2019)
