This crew photo depicts the race crew not the delivery crew who brought Oriole to Hawaii prior to the Tall Ships race.
Those of us in the race crew had about two weeks of work-ups and sail training throughout the Hawaiian islands - Maui, Lanai, Oahu, Kuai, Molokai - prior to bringing Oriole home and besting the civilian yacht Greybeard, at that time the largest, fastest fibreglass monohull racing yacht in the world… and more than half of us had just graduated CFOCS 7802 at CFB Chilliwack – whereupon prior to joining NOTC, HMCS Venture at Esquimalt we were collectively told we’d be shipping out to Pearl for a summer of public duties. Like winning the lottery, only better!
1978 marked the bicentennial of Cook’s Pacific voyages of discovery, hence the impetus to “wave the flag” on behalf of the RCN and, more generally, Canada/BC tourism… upon our return we sailed to and participated in Sea Festivals in both Vancouver and Seattle. It was an idyllic summer of pure magic.
