Served in the Navy 1987 - 2003
Curran, Shelley - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Master Seaman Shelley Curran on the 30 April 2026 at the age of 60. She passed away in Victoria BC due to post-surgical complications.
Shelley was predeceased by her mother, Joan Marie, and her brother, Tracey. She is survived by her brothers Craig, Kevin, James and Brian, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Shelley’s dream was to serve in the Canadian Navy. When she first applied, women were not permitted to serve in the Navy.
In 1987 the Canadian Armed Forces announced the Combat Related Employment of Women (CREW) trials. This opened many trades for women.
On 16 September 1987, Shelley enrolled in the Canadian Navy as a Naval Signalman (later amalgamated to Naval Communicator) becoming the first women in her trade, serving from 1987 until her release in 2003. She started her career at CFB Cornwallis on Course 8739.
Over the course of her career, Shelley served dutifully aboard HMCS Algonquin, HMCS Discovery, HMCS Ottawa, HMCS Vancouver, HMCS Annapolis, HMCS Provider, HMCS Preserver, and HMCS Protecteur.
Shelley served during the Gulf War on HMCS Protecteur from 01 January 1991 until the ship returned to CFB Halifax on 07 April 1991.
Shelley was a true sailor until the day she died, and she will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and shipmates.
A service will be held at Earth's Option Funeral and Cremation Services at 4392 W Shr Pkwy, Victoria BC from 1500 to 1600 hrs.
Friends are also invited to gather afterward at Paparazzi Nightclub 642 Johnson St. Victoria to share a drink and celebrate Shelley’s life.
