LANGHOLM (1941)
HC 56 (1942)
Harbour Craft
Langholm was a large motor launch, purchased by the RCN in November 1940 from Mr. Howard Clark of Alberton for the sum of $2000, and delivered to HMC Dockyard January 14, 1941. Built in Alberton PEI in 1936, Langholm had a wooden hull, was 45 feet overall, with a beam of 11 feet, and draft of 5 feet 9inches. Equipped with twin Ford V8 Engines with a two to one reduction gear and Joe's clutch gear, she had a gas tank capacity 260 gallons. Her gross tonnage was 15 tons.
The staff minute sheet describing her inspection prior to purchase noted "This boat is very strong and has a cabin 16 feet in length in the fore part of the boat. The boat has been used by the Marine and Fisheries as a Patrol Boat, and has a Search light operated from the wheel house, also the usual amount of equipment used on a boat of this class."
Langholm became Harbour Craft 56, with a crew of four from the RCNVR, who lived ashore. It moved other boats around the harbour and went through the submarine gates several times to pick up items from a ship that had been torpedoed just off the entrance to the harbour. She was sold in 1945.
