In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
ELLIOTT, John Gary - 72 years, peacefully passed away at the hospice unit, Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg, NS, on Saturday August 8, 2026, with family by his side. He was the son of Muriel & John Elliott Sr. of Shelburne, NS.
John was an avid outdoors person. In his younger years he dearly loved hunting and fishing with his buddies at Lake Deception; or otherwise just hanging out with his friends or around a campfire in the hopes of others dropping by.
John spent 10 years serving his country in the Royal Canadian Navy. Following this he became co-manager of the Western Tire Store in Shelburne. He then served for a while as a jail keeper at the local town jail.
Relocating next to Colchester County, John began his lifelong career in corrections services, serving initially at the Colchester Correctional Facility in Truro, then transferring to the Halifax Correctional Center for about a year before moving to the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility. His title was Correctional Officer, Sargent and Acting Captain. He worked out of main control during his last 10 years plus, ensuring staff and inmates got to where they were going safely and securely.
In 2016, John was awarded the Governor General's Medal for Exemplary Service. He served for 38 years before retiring in 2023.
Besides his parents, (Muriel and John Elliott), John was predeceased by his infant daughter (Jennifer Elliott).
John is survived by his two daughters and their mothers; Alyssa Hartley (husband Kevin, grandsons Hunter and Elliott, mother Shirley Brown), Guylaine Elliott (mother Deb Kyle), his 4 siblings and their partners; Diane Scott (Jim), Linda Elliott-Chaffey (Christopher), Maureen Locke (Michael), Michael Elliott (Susan), as well as several nieces and nephews and their children. John is also survived by his life partner and beloved companion Margo MacLean.
Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Huskilson's Funeral Home, Shelburne. A Celebration of John's life will take place on Friday September 4, 2026 @ 2:00pm from H.M. Huskilson's Memorial Chapel, 58 Bulkley Street, Shelburne, NS, with Reverend Alice Githinji officiating.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, any act of kindness be shared in his memory or memorial donations made in his honor to any charity of your choice.
The family would sincerely like to thank all those who helped and cared for John over these past few years, especially his doctors, nurses, Continuing Care, Lunenburg County VON, Home Support Services, Fisherman's Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit Staff, his many work colleagues who have reached out, and of course our one and only Stacey and Sherrie who went above and beyond. Your kindness will forever be remembered!
