In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
Son of Thomas Miller (Royal Navy); husband of Margot McRitchie Miller; father of Thomas Fraser Miller. Jack is buried in the Oakridge Memory Gardens, Middle Sackville, Nova Scotia.
Remembering my grandfather: I grew up hearing this story. After one of the ships in the convoy was torpedoed, my grandfather, Jack, was on deck helping the surviving crew members onboard. The crew being rescued were covered in oil from the damaged ship and were unrecognizable. One soldier that my grandfather helped aboard looked at him and called him Moose (my grandfather's nickname). It turned out to be my grandmother's (Jack's wife Margot) cousin. Unfortunately, I don't recall the name of her cousin.
Another story my grandmother often told was getting a call from Grampy (Jack) to say he had to work overnight. The next day, all the ships that had been waiting in the Halifax Harbour would be gone. Grampy wasn't allowed to tell his wife, Margot, that they were shipping out for security reasons. They would leave port in the middle of the night to try and avoid the U-boats sailing off shore.
I'm not sure when Grampy obtained the nickname of Moose but he was widely known by that name. The story goes that he was out in his boat fishing at his camp when he spied what he thought was a moose. From the boat, he shot the moose. When he got ashore, he realized that he had shot his neighbors old horse. (Submitted by Jeanette Paynter)
