John Sumner Hertzbert

Commander, RCN

Born: 1924, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Died: 2010, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

HERTZBERT, John Sumner - Beloved Dad of Anne (Christensen), Ian and Peter Hertzberg, Grandpa, Stepdad, Uncle, born 1924 in Toronto, younger son of Major General Charles Sumner Hertzberg, died 2010 in Victoria, graduated first class Royal Roads military college 1944, WW II Veteran RCN, Commander and then with our mother, Deborah (Harrison) launched second career, The Toy Shop, 1834 Oak Bay Avenue, which he rebuilt following a devastating fire.

He was a popular member of the Unitarian Church W. Saanich Rd., bus driver Sundays collecting elderly members in Oak Bay.

He organized their annual book / garage sale and revelled in garage sale-ing, collecting Corelle and wine glasses, which he then donated for tax credit!

He loved "chick magnet" Oreo. He was a handyman extraordinaire, word Meister but couldn't spell worth a damn. Predeceased by both his wives, our mother Deborah Harrison 1927-2003 (of Kilima Farm Teahouse fame) and June Swenson d. 2005. He was a caring father, advocating for his son Charles Ian Halfdan Hertzberg, a survivor of Woodlands, New Westminster, who died also 2010, living in a group home in Sooke. He dearly loved his grandchildren, the M'Gonigle Hertzbergs - Maggie (Josh) Social worker St. Thomas, Ont; Adrian (Alex) Mathematician Vancouver; Hillary, RN Nanaimo; and June's six grandchildren.

Love and miss you Dad. (The Victoria Times Colonist, 21 Jun 2016)
