Surgeon Lieutenant-Commander, RCN / C.A.F. (Navy)

Born: 17 Sep 1942, Neuenhagen, Germany

Died: 16 Jun 2026

RAUDZUS, Dietmar Eberhardt - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dietmar Eberhardt Raudzus on June 16, 2026, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Dietmar was born on September 17, 1942, in Neuenhagen, Germany, during the Second World War. He immigrated to Canada with his family in 1958 and attended King Edward High School in Vancouver. He went on to study medicine at the University of British Columbia, graduating in 1968.

Prior to graduation Dietmar joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served as a Medical Officer with the Canadian Forces in Europe. Following his military service, he established a successful family practice in Vancouver, where he delivered countless babies and cared for generations of patients. Later in his career, he worked in inpatient geriatrics at St. Paul's Hospital. Never one to stop learning, he completed a Master of Aviation Medicine through University of Otago and subsequently served as a Regional Aviation Medical Officer with Transport Canada.

Dietmar met the love of his life, Brigitte Fassler, on a UBC Hiking Club trip to Mount Seymour in 1963. They married in 1966 and shared 49 wonderful years together before Brigitte's passing in 2015.

An avid outdoorsman, Dietmar found great joy in hunting, fishing, and exploring the natural world. He was also a talented baker and stained-glass artist. His interests were wide-ranging and lifelong: literature, classical music, politics, history, aviation, and anything mechanical. He was equally generous in spirit, supporting many charitable causes throughout his life, particularly the Canadian Red Cross, Covenant House, and Union Gospel Mission.

Dietmar was predeceased by his beloved wife, Brigitte; his parents, Waldtraut (née Zippel) and Johannes Raudzus; and his stepfather, Erwin Ronfeld. He is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Tina (Anatole) and Julia (Jeff); his grandchildren, Ava and Will; his sister, Kristiane (Neal); his brother-in-law, Rainer (Georgia); his nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, colleagues, and former patients.

Dietmar was loved and respected by all who knew him. He possessed a rare combination of intelligence, curiosity, kindness, and humour. Even in the face of illness, he remained optimistic, engaged, and deeply appreciative of life. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched as a physician, mentor, husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

He will be remembered for a life well lived. (Legacy)
