SANDFORD, Daniel - Born 20 October 1918 in Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland (Cambusnethan parish). A son of Matthew Sandford and Sarah Brawley, he emigrated to Canada with his family on 18 July 1926 aboard the SS Doric, Greenock to Quebec. Daniel grew up in Toronto in the Riverdale neighbourhood, and attended St Anne's Catholic School and Bolton Avenue School. He enlisted in the RCNVR c1941/42. Family stories indicate he served in HMCS Calgary K231. His younger brother, Rifleman Matthew Sandford, Royal Rifles of Canada, was captured during the fall of Hong Kong and survived the Japanese POW camps. After the war Daniel settled in the Whitby / Oshawa, Ontario area. He is buried in the Groveside Municipal Cemetery, Whitby, Ontario.
