In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
GRAHAM, Donald Ferguson - Peacefully in his 89th year, the Honourable Donald F. Graham, son of Kingsley Graham Q.C. and his wife Eileen. Predeceased by his two brothers, Dr. Robert Kingsley Graham and Dr. J. Edward (Ted) Graham. Loving companion of Margaret A. Sutcliffe. Dear father of Kingsley D. Graham and the late John Bruce Graham. Donald was born January 31, 1921. After completing high school at Upper Canada College, he graduated from University of Toronto in 1942. There after having completed the requirements of Naval College he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and participated with both distinction and heroism throughout the Second World War first as a sub lieutenant and then promoted to full lieutenant. After the war, he attended law school at Osgoode Hall and was called to the bar in 1948. After graduation he joined the office of the Crown Attorney in 1949 and remained with that office until his elevation to the bench as a magistrate in 1957. He presided first as a magistrate and then in 1968 as a Provincial Court Judge in the criminal courts of the Old City Hall, Toronto, for the next 37 years, making him one of the longest serving judges in the commonwealth. He was fond of pointing out that although many judges were appointed from the distinguished class of 1948, he was the first. His fairness, compassion, wisdom and sense of humour were practically legendary among his colleagues, the lawyers who practised before him and perhaps, most importantly, the accused with whom he dealt. After his retirement in 1996, he served for a time on the Ontario Board of Review but mostly he was freed up to pursue his life-long love of fitness and sports as a member of the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club, Osler Bluff Ski Club and the Business Men's Club YMCA. A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday February 24th, from 5:30 p.m. 8:30 p.m. at the University Club of Toronto, 380 University Ave., Toronto. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army or a charity of your choice, would be appreciated. (The Globe and Mail 14 Feb 2009)
