In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
HORTON, Donald Edwin - beloved husband, father, twin brother, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather & friend, passed away at The Dartmouth General Hospital on Sunday, October 19th, 2025 surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Oxford, NS on January 22,1938. Don was the son of the late Walter & Irene Horton.
Don loved the sea and he joined the Royal Canadian Navy in March 1956 with his twin brother David (Denise). He sailed on many ships and travelled the world making friends & collecting stories along the way. This was evidenced by the frequency with which he would run into familiar faces everywhere he went. He routinely told stories of his adventures and foods from abroad.
After retirement he started his own wholesale company, which again, entailed traveling ,but this time, the Maritime provinces.
His love of the ocean did not end with his retirement. He became an avid sailor, golfer, and finally a woodcarver belonging to the Nova Scotia Wildlife Carvers & Artists Association.
Don was a jack-of-all trades and built a family cottage when his children were young. This special place has been a bonding thread that has tied his future generations together with beautiful memories we all hold close within us. It was also frequented by cherished friends on many a weekend over the years.
It would be remiss to not mention his popcorn making prowess which ended many a summers night shared around the fire.
He will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 61 years, Judy (Belyea). Surviving is his brother, David (Denise); his daughters, Kelly (Ivan) & Trudy and son, David (Sheri); grandchildren Taylor Kavanagh (Elliot), Jeffrey Waldick (Alyssa), Devon Donald ( Fallon) and Lochlan; great grandchildren (his scallywags!!) Nella, Lucy & Milo Kavanagh as well as nieces and nephews.
In the words of his great granddaughter Lucy, "Grampy loved boats.I think he is getting on one right now for a last big adventure!"
He was predeceased by his sister Marion DeGruchy and sister-in-law Virginia "Ginny" Horton (Cameron).
Cremation has taken place under the direction of A.L.Mattatall Funeral Home, Dartmouth, NS. A private family graveside service & internment will be held in Little Harbour, NS.
Donations in Don's memory can be made to Hope for Wildlife or to a charity of your choice.
