In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
DEGG, Brian Martin (Marty) - It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our father, Brian Martin "Marty" Degg on July 1, 2025. He was born in Cuckfield, England on May 11, 1943 and was the son of the late Harold and Marjorie Degg.
At the age of 4, Marty immigrated to Canada with his family, settling in Scarborough, ON where he lived until 1963 when he moved to Halifax, NS to join the Royal Canadian Navy, following in his father's footsteps, who served in the Royal Navy during WW2. Marty proudly served his country from 1963 to 1989, retiring at the rank of Petty Officer 1st Class. In 1989, he took a job at Saint John Shipbuilding with Paramax. Using his skills and knowledge as a Radar Tech in the Navy, he was part of the construction of the Halifax Class Frigates until 1996 when he retired for good.
Marty is survived by daughters Chandra of Truro, Heidi (Gianni) of Sydney, Australia and son William (Christina) of Lantz, brothers George and Gary, sister Janice, all of Ontario, and several nieces and nephews.
Marty was proud of his children but was especially proud to be Grampy to his 4 granddaughters, Sarah, Paige, Giordana, and Milana. They were his greatest joy and they will miss him terribly.
Besides his parents, Marty was predeceased by his wife of 35 years, Niesje, and sister Vicky.
Marty had many hobbies and interests over the years, and was involved with the Cole Harbour Karate Club, earning his brown belt. He made many friendships and lots of memories while he was there.
He always enjoyed his many adventures with his good friend, Peter Goodfellow, and spent many hours together fishing, hiking, camping, and prospecting. We know how much Marty valued their friendship, it meant a lot to his family as well, especially in the years after the passing of Niesje.
Anyone who knew Marty knew he was kind, generous and was always ready to to tell a story, usually about his days as a sailor in the Navy, which contributed to his son William carrying on the family tradition and also joined the Navy.
Following Marty's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. (Arbor Memorial)
