In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
BROWN, Norman Craig - died quietly at home in Bayfield Ontario on June 11, 2011 with his family by his side. He was in his 89th year. Born in Cornwall in 1923, he served during WW II in the Royal Canadian Navy. On his return he attended Queen's University, graduating in 1947 with a B.A. and B.Comm. After attending Osgoode Hall Law School, Norman was called to the Ontario Bar in 1949. He opened his law practice in Cornwall, then moved to Toronto to marry Anne Shields. In 1954 he moved to London, Ontario with his young family to join Don Thompson as Messrs. Thompson, Brown in offices above the Rowland Hill shoe store on Dundas Street. Norman practiced law in London, Ontario as trial and appellate counsel until 1994 when he retired from the firm Dyer, Brown LLP. to live in Bayfield, Ontario with his wife Ruth (nee Wallace), whom he had married in 1979. Service to his profession and his community included terms as President of the Middlesex Law Association, Chairman of the London Public Library and Art Museum, President of the Queen's Alumni Association (London) and, after his retirement, as Treasurer of the Bayfield International Croquet Club. He was an accomplished sailor and an enthusiastic croquet player. Norman's skill in the kitchen and pie making talent were legendary and were regularly applied for the benefit of his friends and many charitable causes. Norman was predeceased by his parents Helen (Craig) and Edgar Brown and siblings Anna Catherine, Betty, Charles and Robert. Norman leaves his wife Ruth; his son Craig Brown (Joanne) and their children Ian, Duncan and Lauren; his daughter Vicki Brown (Jim) and her children Jessica (Nick) Rebecca and Andrew; his daughter Buffy Knill (Colin) and their children Ryan and Alison, and his great granddaughter Olivia. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Salvation Army or the Bayfield Pioneer Park Association. A gathering of friends and family to remember Norman will took place at the Bayfield Town Hall on Sunday, July 17, 2011 from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. (The Clinton News Record 22 Jun 2011)
