Joseph Francis McKenna

Died: 02 Jul 2025, Musquodoboit Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada

 

McKENNA, Joseph Francis - age 84, of Porter's Lake, passed away July 2, at the Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital in Musquodoboit Harbour. Born in Antigonish, he was the son of Joseph Fulton McKenna and Cleophus Home. Joseph was a devoted husband and father. He spent 35 years as a mariner with 7 years in the Navy and 28 years in the Canadian Coast Guard, serving as Captain for his last 18 years.

 

Outside of work and family, Joseph was dedicated to supporting members of Alcoholics Anonymous, supporting the Somme Legion, and was a surviving member of the HMCS Kootenay. He was also an avid community card player, favoring cribbage and 45s, and for a few years held a spot on the Legion Provincial Cribbage team. He was a mason, a woodworker, and kept busy after retirement as a handyman and boating safety instructor.

 

Survived by his wife, Margaret Jean Lee of Porter's Lake, NS; sons, Ryan McKenna of Porter's Lake, NS, and Ian McKenna of New York, NY; sons, Paul Francis McKenna of Calgary, AB, and Joseph Henry McKenna of Halifax, NS, and their mother Barbara McKenna; sisters, Joyce Holley, Faye Steeves and Paula Tulkens, Dawn McKenna; brothers, Gary McKenna, Dan McKenna and Wade McKenna; 3 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

 

Predeceased by his parents, sister Joan Maclntyre, Kerry Ruth in infancy, nephew Jamie McKenna, Brother-in-law Clifford Maclntyre.

 

A family gathering will be held at the Antigonish Legion, 75 St Ninian Street, Antigonish, NS on Wednesday July 9th, 2025 from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Dartmouth Somme Legion, 54 King Street, Dartmouth, NS, on August 23rd, 2025 from 1:00 - 4:00 PM.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion (Arbor Memorial)
