In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
MYLIE, Malcolm Douglas (Doug) - was born in Edmonton, Alberta but the family moved shortly after to the Vancouver area, in what was then the rural area of Burnaby. At the beginning of World War II the family moved to 5th Avenue in Vancouver, so his father could work in the Shipyard for the War effort. Doug had nothing but good memories of his family and childhood growing up. He was the youngest of 4 and always knew his brothers and sister had his back. Doug always had a part time job doing something while he was at school. After he left school at 15 and tried a variety of jobs, in February 1952, he decided at the young age of 17 to join the Navy. The Korean War was going on and recruits were needed. He had to have his parent's permission and his father gladly signed for him. From there he made the first of his many trips by train to HMC Cornwallis, recruit school for basic training. Eventually the second ship he was on, HMCS Provider was sent to Korea. He also spent about a year in Japan, a country he loved for all his life. After the war he was living his dream as the Navy took him all over the world. The Navy became his career until retirement in the late 1970's. Looking back he always said, he had no regrets and felt they were the best years of his life! He made many lasting friendships! After retirement from the Navy, Doug worked as head of Maintenance at the Hillside Mall for several years, eventually moving to Esquimalt Recreation Centre and Swimming Pool, where he worked until his full retirement in 2000, reaching the position as Maintenance Supervisor.
Doug married his first wife Delores in 1954. They raised three sons starting in 1958 in their Vic West home. Doug was very proud of the fact he was the first of his Navy pals to purchase his own house. He lived there until 1994, when with his current wife Linda, he moved into his second and last new home in Parklane Townhouses in Esquimalt. Along with Linda he also inherited two beautiful daughters. Family was first and foremost in his life and he cherished each and every one until his very last breath. His family all loved him as well and were so pleased they were able to be with him to say their final good-byes!
Doug enjoyed reading, model ship building, gardening, travelling, and cooking (a gene he passed on to all his sons.) He also loved to talk and could converse with anyone of any age at any time. Doug lived his life to the fullest and he had many great stories to tell at any given time. Everyone loved his stories. Some told over and over again, but always interesting and full of laughter. He was never happier than to get fresh ears to enjoy his great stories!
Doug spent the last 5 months of his life at Veterans Memorial Lodge at Broadmead on the Olympic View Ward, where he received the most loving care until his passing. He was very proud that he made the cover of their Fall Magazine.
Doug was predeceased by his father Bob, mother, Edna, brothers Murray, Bruce (Kay), Don (Evelyn), sister Georgina Blonde (Bob) and his eldest granddaughter Danielle Mylie.
He is survived by his wife Linda, sons Doug (LaDonna), Randy (Dayna), Kevin (Shannon), and former daughter-in-law Claudine. Stepdaughters Colleen DeJong (Kevin), Carin Robinson (Kyle), sisters-in-law Maureen Mylie, Sandra Johnson (Butch), Bobbi Sheridan, Maureen Martin, and brother-in-law Andy Martin. Grandchildren Sheldon, Liam, Emma, Nolan (Molly) Brendan, Aidan, Lily, Mathew and Danny. Great granddaughter Ruthie. He also had many nieces and nephews and one special great niece Zoe, the only one who lived in Victoria and he became very close to from the time she was a baby. He was also extremely pleased that his niece Wendy McGivern was able visit him many times over the last few months.
Many thanks to our family Doctor, Shannon Houston, Dr. Dale Nicholl, Doug's personal caregiver Kinder, and all the wonderful staff on the Olympic View Lodge at Broadmead who looked after all of Doug's needs so compassionately. Also many thanks to the caring staff in the Broadmead Health Centre Day Program (Troy and Derrick and so many others) who looked after Doug so well and kept him entertained for the last three years. As you all know he loved to talk and you all faithfully listening to him.
A Celebration of Doug's life will be held on Saturday, November 8th at 2pm at Sands Funeral Chapel, 317 Goldstream Ave, Colwood, BC (Parking across the street) Reception to follow.
