James (Jim) Hersey

RCN / C.A.F.

Died: 28 Aug 2019

HERSEY, James (Jim) - It is with great sadness that the Hersey family announces the passing of James Hersey, age 83. Jim was outside, tending to his yard and garden when he suffered a stroke. Despite the prompt response of neighbour and medical staff, Jim passed away in QEII Health Sciences Centre the following day. Jim was in the Navy when he met his wife, Heather (Hill) Hersey. He served proudly, receiving many commendations and awards including one for a challenging high sea rescue of a stricken Greek tanker off the coast of Nova Scotia, ensuring that many of those mariners could return safely to their family. With a young family of his own, Jim decided to transition from the navy to civilian life to better support his family. After the Navy, Jim successfully managed a Shell Service Station in downtown Dartmouth for over 20 years before retiring in 1997. His friendly nature and great service made many loyal customers. Jim and Heather are survived by their sons, Jamie and David Hersey; and his sisters, Linda (Hersey) Smith and Marie Hersey. The Celebration of Life will be in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth on September 7th at 1 p.m. Donations, in lieu of flowers, can be made to the QEII Health Centre Foundation.
