Murray Robinson

Lieutenant, RCNVR

Born: 29 Nov 1922, Brandon, Manitoba, Canada

Died: 30 Oct 2014

ROBINSON, Murray - Officer, Royal Canadian Navy, World War II Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal - Murray died in his home on October 30, 2014 at age 92. Murray was born in Brandon, Manitoba, the son of Edith (McCrae) and Frank Robinson, brother to Doreen (Lindsay) and Mona (Brownrigg). After moving to Montreal, Murray attended Lower Canada College (LCC '39). He was a proud and involved alumni of LCC. Murray served during the Second World War as a gunnery officer on the Royal Canadian Navy Corvette HMCS Wetaskiwin in the North Atlantic. After the war, he graduated from McGill University, where he also played football. While working during the summer at Jasper Park Lodge, Murray met Helen Bell of Toronto, who was the love of his life. Murray and Helen were married in 1949 and raised a family: Anne (John Kalter), Ian (Terry Miro) and Judith (Jaswant Ubhi). Murray was a financial adviser and Manager of the Montreal office of the Mutual Life Insurance Co. Murray and Helen had 61 married years together filled with friends, church, travel and many happy times spent at their beloved cottage on Lake Massawippi. Murray was an avid runner before it became popular, and a passionate cross-country skier who would bushwhack through the woods alone for many miles. Helen died in 2010, and Murray remained in their home to the end, as he wished. This was possible because of the love and support of many, for which we are grateful: his caregivers Gladys, Joanne, Erline and Vita; Dr. Towers and Kathy MacDonald of Mount Sinai as well as Dr. Malcolm and Dr. Dawson at the RVH. Murray benefited greatly from the constant care and friendship of Joan and Bill Foster. Murray was proud of his grandchildren Rebecca, Christopher, Maggie and Charles, his nephew Robin Brownrigg (of Nassau), his nieces Jane Lindsay (of Ottawa), Alison Moore (of Burnaby), Laurie Fowler (of Calgary) and nephew Alan Moore (of Calgary). A memorial service for Murray will be held at Montreal West United Church, 88 Ballantyne N. on January 10, 2015 at 3 pm, followed by a reception. Murray will join Helen in MacPherson Cemetery in Georgeville, Eastern Townships, where he blazed many cross-country ski trails. In lieu of flowers, Murray would have appreciated a donation to the NDG Food Depot. (Published in the Gazette 07 Nov 2014)
