Died: 27 Aug 2014, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada

 

McGUIGAN, Basil Frederick - age 84, Starrs Road, Yarmouth, passed away with his family at his side on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born March 22, 1930 in Hope River, PEI, he was a son of the late Frederick and Mary (Doucette) McGuigan. Basil began a 25 year career with the Canadian Navy at the young age of 17. Following this, he worked the next 20 years as a property assessor for the provincial government. He loved bowling and was an avid pool player, playing right up until two weeks before his death. He was a devoted member of Saint Ambrose Cathedral parish, where he served as a lay reader. He was also a member of the NSGEU and the FSNA. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 54 years, Irene (Deveau) McGuigan, as well as by their children, Donna (Terry) Dulong, Lower Sackville; Deborah (Russ) Staynor, Ottawa; Susan McGuigan (Shawn Wells), Yarmouth; Karen (Mike) Kane, Dartmouth; Vernon (Lynda) McGuigan, Ottawa, as well as by grandchildren, Amanda, Christopher (Samantha), Kyle, Kelly, Sarah, Paul, Matthew, Joshua and a step-granddaughter, Amber; great grandchildren, Damen, Joey, Alyssa and step-great grandchildren, Matthew, Izzick and Aliyah. Also surviving are sisters, Genevieve McKarris, Charlottetown and Jeanette Moore, Whitby, ON, as well as sisters-in-law, Elizabeth McGuigan and Emily McGuigan, both of Charlottetown. Aside from his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Vernon, Burt and Bernie, as well as by sisters, Anne, Freda, Bertha, Marguerette, Maureen, Trudy, Florence and Edith. The family would like to acknowledge and thank Dr. Winston Wertlen, as well as the nursing staff on 4-East at the Yarmouth Hospital for the care they showed Basil and his family. Visitation will be held at H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth on Sunday from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, September 1 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Ambrose Cathedral, Yarmouth, Rev. Gerald David officiating. Interment will follow in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery. It has been requested that there be family flowers only.
